Reasons

A few reasons why I have the best husband:

1. When Melissa came to town last week for the New Kids concert, he suggested we girls get a room at the St. Paul the night of the show. (Which was a fun idea no matter what, but became a totally splendid idea when I found out Mo's return flight departed at 7 a.m.)

2. Right now he is in the kitchen making tater tot hot dish. (Yes it is as good as the name might imply.)

3. When I was in Memphis my laptop stopped working. I opened it on Friday morning and the monitor no longer illuminated. (You could sort of see the screen if you squinted and held it really close to a light.) Even though next on our list of Big Purchases was a desktop computer for him, I had a brand new (totally awesome and NOT DELL) laptop by Sunday.

4. This afternoon he made us hot chocolate. And not in the microwave. With milk he steamed on the stove.

5. He didn't gloat after Ohio State's loss yesterday. Not even a little bit.

Nice Little Saturday

We had a nice little Saturday.

This morning we made our monthly trip to CostCo, so I spent a good portion of the afternoon finding room for 20 rolls of paper towels and a case of hot chocolate.

We took an afternoon walk in the park after we watched the Gophers win at Purdue (first time since 1990!), and spent the rest of the day cleaning and doing laundry.

Right now we're on the couch with three of our four dogs -- Eller cried until we made room for him -- watching the Ohio State game. We're a football family, for sure.

When I imagined married life, a day like today is pretty close to the picture I had in my head.

Bruce

Merrills 1974

My dad's brother Bruce died this morning. It happened suddenly, and I can't really believe it.

He's 18 months older than my dad, but because of the timing of their birthdays, they were only a year apart in school. Bruce was outgoing where my dad is introverted. Bruce was the comic to my dad's straight man. My dad only joined a fraternity because Bruce joined before him. They were friends. They were brothers.

My aunt and uncle came to our wedding in May, and in most of the photos of my dad walking me down the aisle, you can see Bruce standing to the side with his video camera. It made me laugh when I first saw those photos, because if there is one thing all Merrill men have in common, it is their love of gadgets, especially cameras.

I realized earlier today that his youngest granddaughter is exactly the same age I was -- my grandfather's youngest granddaughter --when my grandfather passed away in 1988. Twelve is too young to lose your Grandpa Merrill.

Molly Beth

This sweet little bug is laying next to me, cooing away and looking at her hands. Her mama, my friend Sarah, is at a doctor's appointment. I've loved spending so many days with her, but it will be hard to leave.

I look forward to summers when they come visit, and we go to the fair and eat cookies and cheese curds. I think MB will like cheese curds.
