Unique
What always strikes me in amazement is the perfection in the details.
No one else on Earth - not a single one among the billions - has a footprint like his. Has there ever been more proof that we were uniquely created by a loving Creator than a baby's brand new foot?
When I was younger, my mom used to comment that seeing newborns was often more than she could take, because when she looked at them, she was overwhelmed by the struggles they'd face in their lives. I didn't get it; I thought it sounded defeatist or cynical. But on Saturday, when I held Baby Abe, all of 15 days old, and he snuggled into my shoulder and yawned his baby yawns, I got it all too clearly.
The human condition is a tough one. We hurt each other in the most remarkable ways, and as an adult you're acutely aware that disaster is always a car ride or thunder storm away. And yet. There is no trading love. No trading joy. No trading the crash of foamy waves or the tickle of a baby's laugh. No trading the freedom of surrender to the One who controls it all.
