Lessons from Cougar Town — Wedded Wednesday

Posted on | March 10, 2010 | 3 Comments

On tonight’s Cougar Town (don’t judge, it’s actually funny) the main character’s married neighbors—Ellie & Andy—got into a fight. Once they made up, they said to their friend and neighbor Jules…

Ellie: When a marriage really works, the tiny bumps in the road don’t matter. You don’t have to be scared cause there’s never any real jeopardy.

Andy: There’s a built in safety net, cause we love each other so much.

Now, I would argue that love is NOT all you need (more on that at a later date), but it’s a start. It’s definitely a start.

I agree. Love is an important component, but commitment to making the marriage work, dedication to never giving up, and faith in something greater than the two of you. This last because if you see your own happiness as the center of the universe, you’re doomed before you start. So would that be a healthy sense of perspective?

The guy who married us, an ELCA minister, also provided (and pretty much required) pre-marital counseling. He was a riot but not a good model for healthy marriage. He and his current wife (second? third?) apparently argued a lot. And when they did, they would sometimes take their wedding rings off and just walk away. If M and I learned nothing else from Rev. Mike, we learned how not to conduct a healthy argument.

@erica, Ha, yes. Sometimes the best models are what NOT to do.

I came here to comment but Erica’s first paragraph basically says it. And the idea of taking your ring off while arguing is maybe the most awful and least productive thing I have ever heard. Ugh.
