So.
I'm 26.
I can't say that it feels
any different, or that I look any older. Although I did spend
a few obsessive moments yesterday looking at my wrinkles in a
magnifying mirror. Now the lines on my forehead are all surrounded
by little freckles, since the way to prevent wrinkling is to lay
out and turn sunny and freckled. Exactly.
Regardless of all that,
I just spent three hours or so at the pool, as the best way to
pass time on your birthday is in few clothes and cool water. It
seems that growing up practically every birthday party I had took
place at a pool or waterpark.

This is either my
8th or 9th birthday, I can't really remember, but probably 9th.
We were at the water slides at Games People Play on FM 1960. Julie,
Heather, Chrissy, Hannah, Halee and Kara. June 1985 (or '84).

My 10th birthday
pool party, June 1986, in my neighbors' backyard. Clockwise from
me - Hannah, Maggie, Michele, Halee, Chrissy and Kara.
Then there was the year
I turned 11 and my friend Dawn, who'd turned eleven just a week
prior, and I had a double birthday party. We spent the day at
Splashtown (or was it WaterWorld?), before heading back to her
giant house for Little Ceaser's pizzas and a sleep-over. (I can't
believe I actually have a picture. I'm pretty sure one of my friends
had a matching Coca-Cola bathing suit. T?)

Happy Birthday Dawn
and Hannah - June 1987
When I came back inside
this afternoon there were several messages on my machine and flowers
from my dad. I set the colorful basket complete with noisemakers
and a birthday cake shaped card on the bar next to all my cards,
three of which are from my mother.
My pops was supposed to
fly over this weekend but wasn't able to make it due to the weather.
I was pretty bummed out about it, still am, but I understand.
This marks the first time ever that I'm not spending my birthday
with family and it feels pretty weird.
But in an hour or so I'm
heading over to T's to celebrate with my Atlanta family and that'll
be a close second. Although T, unlike my mother, actually baked
me a cake. One of my cousins owns an IGA and let's just say my
mom and her sisters keep that bakery in business buying birthday
and anniversary cakes.
Thanks for the well wishes.
I'll let you know how 26 turns out.
